Welcomes Our New Principal

Mrs. Myra Newman!

We would like to welcome Mrs. Myra Newman to Avoca.  Mrs. Newman will be our new principal.  She comes to us from Central Elementary School.  You will see her in the building throughout the remainder of the school year as she has the opportunity to familiarize herself with the Avoca students, faculty, and staff.  Mrs. Newman and Dr. Lilly will be working together to facilitate her transition to Avoca.  The faculty, staff, and students are looking forward to having her as our principal.

Quest for Success!

Quest for Success Prize Winners

Being on the honor roll, meeting your reading goal, having perfect attendance, and exhibiting good behavior are just some of the things that you can do to help you be a good student.  Recently some of our students were rewarded for meeting these expectations.  Each six week grading period a child's name was placed in the "Quest for Success" drawing if they met one or more of the goals listed above.  Just think if you did all of the things listed above your name could have been in the drawing twenty-four times.  We had eight very lucky students recently.  One child from each grade level won a bicycle and one child in our school won a laptop computer for their achievements.  Thank you to Friendship Ford for providing these incentives.  Congratulations to our winners!

What a Treat!

PTA provided a special treat for Teacher Appreciation Week.  All faculty and staff received a 15 minute massage during their planning time.  It was absolutely wonderful!  Thank you so much to the PTA for their thoughtfulness.  We sincerely thank everyone for the time and effort you put into making this such a special week for all of us.

 Earth Day Minimize

Third Graders Celebrate Earth Day

The third grade students celebrated Earth Day by planting some trees.  One of the trees that they planted is a very special tree.  The beautiful pink dogwood tree was planted in memory of Erin Page, the daugther of kindergarten teacher Kimberly Malone.  They planted the tree right outside of Mrs. Malone's classroom so she can see it all the time.  The first grade students also participated in the tree plantings.  This was a great way to celebrate Earth Day.  Thank you to the Tate family who had the trees, mulch, and a special plaque donated by Evergreen, Wal-Mart, and Eddie's Trophies.

Mega Party Fun

Students enjoyed the inflatable games at the Mega Party provided by the PTA.  This event was planned to thank the students for participating in the PTA fundraiser earlier in the school year.  Thank you to the PTA for holding this event.  Everyone had a great time.

 Teacher Requests Minimize

Parents with concerns or input regarding their child’s placement next year should let the principal know in writing by the last day of school.  Heterogeneous grouping in homerooms is a priority.  Several factors are considered when making placements, including equality of classes, gender, and teacher input.  Parental requests are certainly considered but cannot be guaranteed.  Keep in mind that most grade levels also use flexible grouping in order to tailor instruction in math and reading, which means a child's homeroom teacher may or may not be teaching any particular subject.
