Avoca Students
Rewarded for Reading
Avoca Elementary School students celebrated their reading accomplishments with a special trip to the Johnson Controls Ice Skating Rink at Bristol Motor Speedway on January 10 & 11, 2012. All students who met their individual reading goals for the 1st semester were invited to come and ice skate. There were 273 students eligible to attend this event. All students who attended met individual reading goals set by their teacher. In grades K-2 students kept reading logs which included AR quizzes taken. In grades 3-6 students were required to meet their AR point goals each nine weeks and maintain an average percent correct of 85% or above for the semester to qualify for the ice skating reward. Students went in small groups each day to ice skate. Many parents joined us to assist with tying lots of ice skates for children. We are glad that so many were a part of this celebration. We sincerely thank Mr. Jerry Caldwell, General Manager of Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway, Mrs. Claudia Byrd, and the Johnson Controls Ice Rink staff for allowing us the opportunity to have some ice skating fun. We appreciate Bristol Motor Speedway’s support of our students and their accomplishments.

Reach for the Stars
“Exceed Expectations!”

Claudia Byrd and Ben Knight from Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway helped us kickoff a new school year by inspiring all of us to, "Exceed Expectations!". The Avoca Elementary school-wide reading theme, Reach for the Stars - "Exceed Expectations!" not only encourages us to strive to be the best that we can be, but it is also a tribute to Jeff Byrd. His motto "Exceed Expectations!" is an inspiration to the Bristol Motor Speedway family and now to all of us at Avoca. Claudia and Ben are carrying on Jeff's legacy as they support Avoca Elementary School students and staff in our efforts to strive for success in all we do. They challenged the students to meet their reading goals each nine weeks and offered incentives for those that meet these expectations. All students who meet their point goals and achieve an average percent correct of 85% and above on Accelerated Reader quizzes will qualify for some great incentives. During the 1st semester (1st and 2nd nine weeks) students meeting these goals will be invited to go ice skating at the speedway. Students who meet these goals the 2nd semester (3rd and 4th nine weeks) will be a part of the annual Avoca Drags. Claudia and Ben would love to see every student meet these goals and "Exceed Expectations!". They will be stopping by throughout the school year to track our progress. Avoca Elementary students and staff would like to thank Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway and especially Claudia Byrd and Ben Knight for their support.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures |
 |
|
Our first priority at Avoca is the safety of our students. With this in mind, we are providing you with the following information regarding our procedures for arrival and dismissal.
Arrival:Dismissal:
The door at the cafeteria will be unlocked for students from 7:45 to 8:10 a.m. All other doors will remain locked. Please refrain from knocking on a side door or asking someone on the inside to open a door for you as this will jeopardize the security of our students. Students may not be dropped off at Avoca before 7:45; as there will not be supervision outside the school building. When dropping off your child each morning, please do not come into the front parking lot. All parents dropping off students should proceed through the gate and continue around the circular drive behind the school. Students may exit vehicles at the cafeteria side of the building and proceed to the cafeteria. Students are expected to go directly to the cafeteria to have breakfast or to wait before being released to report to class. All other areas of the building are off-limits prior to the 8:00 a.m. bell. Parents wishing to accompany their children past the cafeteria will need to report to the office to receive a VISITOR’S PASS.
Students will go to classes at 8:00 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 8:10. A parent must accompany any student who arrives after 8:10 to the office to be given a tardy slip.
Preschool students are dismissed through the main front doors at 1:15 p.m. The school day ends at 3:10 p.m. for all other students. Bus riders exit the building from the gym doors. The front drive will be reserved for buses from 2:45-3:30. All car riders are to exit through the cafeteria, not side/back doors. We will once again be using a number to identify your child for car loading. Students attending Avoca last year will continue to use the same numbers. However, if you are unable to locate the car rearview mirror tag from last year, we will provide you with one for this school year. All new students at Avoca have been issued a number for parents to display on car rearview mirrors. Your child’s number will be sent home in your child’s folder. This number will be used to identify your child for car loading. Please be sure to post the assigned number on your rearview mirror each afternoon so that we can dismiss students in a timely fashion. Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, parents will not be able to park and enter the building during dismissal time. Cars at dismissal will be routed around the back of the building. Upon reaching the rear of the building, cars will be split into two lanes and funneled back into one lane at the other end of the building, where we will direct groups of cars to cones for pick-up.

We must have approval from the parent when a student’s departure plans have changed. Please contact the school office before 2:00 to change pick-up plans. Parents arriving before 2:30 will follow early check-out procedures. The deadline for early check-out is 2:30. After 2:30 students must follow their normal dismissal routine. Please consider early check-out procedures when making afternoon appointments (i.e. doctor, dentist, etc.)
It is truly an honor and a privilege to be the principal of Avoca Elementary and work as a partner to ensure the best education for your child. I promise you that I will care for your child as I do my own child. I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit Avoca and be a part of your community’s school. Together, we will make a positive difference for your child. If we can assist you anyway, please do not hesitate to call. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. We are going to have a fantastic year!
Working together,
Myra Newman
