09-02-2010
As we first explained a few months ago, Tennessee has begun raising the bar with higher academic standards in the classroom. Higher standards help make sure students are ready for a career or college. That means mastering the basics like reading and math, and developing skills that colleges and employers value - like communications, problem solving and teamwork. But higher standards also mean harder tests - and maybe lower test scores and grades, in the near term.
If your child is struggling with higher standards and harder tests, don't get discouraged. As a parent, it's time to EXPECT MORE so your child can ACHIEVE MORE. For further information on this topic click on the link provided below.

AR Information Access
View your child's AR progress from home! Parents of students in grades 2-6 will be receiving an informational letter explaining this option. Home Connect will not only allow you to see your child's progress, but it will also let you see if your child has read a book previously and search for AR titles. If you child is using Accelerated Math in their classroom it will let you check on their progress in AM too. Be looking for this letter in your child's folder. If you have any questions feel free to contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Loveday.

Here's to Our Heroes
Reading Saves the Day!
Thank you to everyone who came to participate in our reading kickoff. It was a great day to celebrate reading! We appreciate those community members who took the time to share information about their jobs and how reading helps them every day. A special thank you to Ben Knight of Bristol Motor Speedway for letting everyone know of the BMS sponsored rewards they will receive for meeting their reading goals each semester.

Here's to Our Heroes
Reading Saves the Day!
Here's to Our Heroes - Reading Saves the Day, is the Avoca Elementary school-wide reading theme for this year. The theme focuses on the importance of reading in our curriculum. Through this program we will provide incentives for each child to meet their reading/Accelerated Reader goals each nine weeks. Students will also have the opportunity to work together as a class to meet a goal as well as working toward a school-wide goal. We will have special incentives for students to meet their individual, classroom, and school-wide goal.
Individual Goal
- Students will have a reading goal set by their teacher each nine weeks. *K-2 students will keep reading logs including books read to, read with, read independently and AR quizzes passed to meet their reading goal. Reading goals for students in grades 3-6 are based on AR quizzes passed. (As a part of the individual goal the student should have an overall average of 85% correct or above on their AR quizzes and obtain 100% of their point goal.)
- If a student meets their reading goal each nine week period they will be rewarded with special treats and recognition. (Examples: Coupons for area attractions and/or restaurants, recognized at nine weeks reward assembly, treats from BMS )
- Students who meet their reading goal (point goal each nine weeks and have a semester percent correct average of 85% or above) for the entire first semester will be eligible for a special event. (Ice Skating at BMS)
- Students who meet their reading goal (point goal each six weeks and have a semester percent correct average of 85% or above) for the entire second semester will be invited to a special event. (Drag Racing at BMS)
Class Goal
- Each class will see how many books they can read this year.
- When a class has read 100 books they will receive a special treat.
- The number of books read by the entire school is placed on a special display in the main hallway and on the school sign.
- Announcements of the number of books read by each class will be made on a regular basis.
School Goal
- Our goal as a school is to exceed 60,000 books read by the end of the 2010-2011 school year.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures |
 |
|
Our first priority at Avoca is the safety of our students. With this in mind, we are providing you with the following information regarding our procedures for arrival and dismissal.
Arrival:Dismissal:
The door at the cafeteria will be unlocked for students from 7:45 to 8:10 a.m. All other doors will remain locked. Please refrain from knocking on a side door or asking someone on the inside to open a door for you as this will jeopardize the security of our students. Students may not be dropped off at Avoca before 7:45; as there will not be supervision outside the school building. When dropping off your child each morning, please do not come into the front parking lot. All parents dropping off students should proceed through the gate and continue around the circular drive behind the school. Students may exit vehicles at the cafeteria side of the building and proceed to the cafeteria. Students are expected to go directly to the cafeteria to have breakfast or to wait before being released to report to class. All other areas of the building are off-limits prior to the 8:00 a.m. bell. Parents wishing to accompany their children past the cafeteria will need to report to the office to receive a VISITOR’S PASS.
Students will go to classes at 8:00 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 8:10. A parent must accompany any student who arrives after 8:10 to the office to be given a tardy slip.
Preschool students are dismissed through the main front doors at 1:15 p.m. The school day ends at 3:00 p.m. for all other students. Bus riders exit the building from the gym doors. The front drive will be reserved for buses from 2:45-3:30. All car riders are to exit through the cafeteria, not side/back doors. We will once again be using a number to identify your child for car loading. Students attending Avoca last year will continue to use the same numbers. However, if you are unable to locate the car rearview mirror tag from last year, we will provide you with one for this school year. All new students at Avoca have been issued a number for parents to display on car rearview mirrors. Your child’s number will be sent home in your child’s folder. This number will be used to identify your child for car loading. Please be sure to post the assigned number on your rearview mirror each afternoon so that we can dismiss students in a timely fashion. Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, parents will not be able to park and enter the building during dismissal time. Cars at dismissal will be routed around the back of the building. Upon reaching the rear of the building, cars will be split into two lanes and funneled back into one lane at the other end of the building, where we will direct groups of cars to cones for pick-up.

We must have approval from the parent when a student’s departure plans have changed. Please contact the school office before 2:00 to change pick-up plans. Parents arriving before 2:30 will follow early check-out procedures. The deadline for early check-out is 2:30. After 2:30 students must follow their normal dismissal routine. Please consider early check-out procedures when making afternoon appointments (i.e. doctor, dentist, etc.)
This will be my fourth year serving as a principal, and my second with Avoca students. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be the principal of Avoca Elementary and work as a partner to ensure the best education for your child. I promise you that I will care for your child as I do my own child. I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit Avoca and be a part of your community’s school. Together, we will make a positive difference for your child. If we can assist you anyway, please do not hesitate to call. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. We are going to have a fantastic year!
Working together,
Myra Newman
